Always entertaining, and thought provoking, Norris awakens us to the possibility of belief. God is not what you think. Visions of an angry, distant, moral scorekeeper or a supernatural Santa Claus handing out cosmic lottery tickets to those who attend the right church or say the right prayer dominate our culture. For many others, God has become irrelevant or simply unbelievable. In The Divine Dance, Fr. Richard Rohr (with Mike Morrell) points readers to an unlikely opening beyond this divinity impasse: the at-times forgotten, ancient mystery of the Trinity-God as utterly one, yet three. Drawing from Scripture, theology, and the deepest insights of mystics, philosophers, and sages throughout history, Fr. Rohr presents a compelling alternative to aloof and fairytale versions of God: One God, belovedly in communion, as All-Vulnerable, All-Embracing, and All-Given to you and me. The Divine Dance makes accessible and practicable the Christian tradition's most surprising gift... God as Community...as Friendship...as Dance. Are you ready to join in? Finding the sweet spot where contemporary science meets ancient mysticism, and theology meets poetry, The Divine Dance sketches a beautiful choreography for a life well-lived. In our joy or our pain, true life is always relational, a flow, a dance.

Credo by William Sloane Coffin ; James Carroll

Format: Hardcover with Dust Jacket

Published by Westminster John Knox Press, 2004

about The Author:

William Sloane Coffin Served As Chaplain Of Yale University And Williams College, Was Senior Minister Of Riverside Church, And Is President Emeritus Of Sane/freeze: Campaign For Global Security. Of language and its quest for truth of which each and every word of a dictionary is entrusted, so long as no word per se can lord it over all the other words. Keepers of the word, words cannot keep a secret, bound as they are both to reveal and conceal it at one and the same time. Except for a parrot, language has no mother tongue: it inherits only that which it can translate: the everlasting into the ephemeral, the temporal into the eternal, speaking into writing - into that which happens once and for all. Language is iconic and iconoclastic. It is propitious to God and would-be gods and, conversely, it is equally allergic to idols. Hence the title of this book, borrowed from a line of W.H. Auden's Christmas Oratorio. No sooner is God worshipped than God is turned into an idol. Biblical or not, religious or secular, literature is iconoclastic. ¨Promethean iconoclasm quarrels with God. Ironically less theistic, the paradox of Abrahamic iconoclasm lies in laying bare the duplicity, not so much of God, as of all human all too human conceptions of a God which, falling short of God, becomes an idol that can only be rebuked even by God if not by Abraham, the father of faith. No wonder, Western literature has dealt with the death of God rather than with the living God: its task has consisted in wording a world shaped and left to go adrift by Christian tradition itself gone irrelevant and locked up in a mother tongue no one speaks instead of time and again unleashing and worlding the Word.

Product image is for illustration purposes only and may not be an exact representation of the product offered for sale.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0714/9951/4148/files/PID0000000177_1ade65d0-cfb0-4db5-9e73-8492d702c94c.jpg?v=1784389940
bbc0000073186
The Christian Doctrine of Creation and Redemption: Dogmatics, Vol. II - Brunner, Emil

The Christian Doctrine of Creation and Redemption: Dogmatics, Vol. II by Brunner, Emil

Format: Hardcover with Dust Jacket

Published by Westminster Press, 1952

This book delves into the Christian doctrine of creation and redemption through an exploration of the historical realization of God?s self-communication. While many non-Christian religions and philosophical teachings speak of a creator figure, only the Christian faith posits a creator who is the Lord of the universe and has revealed himself to us through his word. In the Christian doctrine, God brings the world into existence through the power of his word, and his creation is shaped by his purpose and ultimate goal for it. The author explores the profound significance of the idea that God is the one who determines all things and is determined by none, examining the biblical concept of creatio ex nihilo and emphasizing God?s complete and sole responsibility for the existence of the world. The book also considers the relationship between creation and revelation, arguing that the same Word that created the world also reveals to us the truth that it has been created. This concept of a personal and purposeful creation leads to a very particular view of the world and the place of humanity within it, something which the author discusses in depth. Overall, the book grapples with deep questions about the nature of God, the origin of the world, and the purpose of human existence, offering insights that will resonate with those interested in the profound intersections of philosophy and theology.

Product image is for illustration purposes only and may not be an exact representation of the product offered for sale.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0714/9951/4148/files/PID0000000177_7ca994e0-86ed-4cac-9e30-29b317156b1f.jpg?v=1784389942
bbc0000073190
Paul Tillich: Retrospect and Future - Ferre, Nels F. With extraordinary candor and psychological acumen, Augustine recounts his passage from a life of sensuality, Manichaean superstition, and empty careerism to a genuine spiritual awakening, and he articulates views on marriage, morality, and faith that have shaped our discourse ever since. The Confessions allows us to appreciate both the startling modernity of Augustine's insights and the imperishable poetry of his voice. In The Christmas Letters, Magrey deVega invites you to hear about the miracle of Christ’s birth from those who first told the story. The letters in the New Testament, known as the Epistles, contain the first attempts by the church to understand and celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation. They point us to the origins of what we believe about Jesus, fully human and fully divine. Don't Know Much About the Bible by New York Times bestselling author Kenneth C. Davis is designed to illuminate everything we need to know about the Good Book but never learned.
With wit, authority, and intelligence, Davis brings the world of the Old and New Testaments to vivid life, setting the panorama of the Scriptures against the historical events that shaped them; clearing up misconceptions and mistranslations; summarizing Bible stories, parables, and miracles; and adding fresh new insights to the world's most owned, least understood book.
Davis is uniquely qualified for the assignment. The creator of the bestselling Don't Know Much About series, which has more than 1.6 million copies in print, he now illuminates the bestselling book of all time using his inimitable question-and-answer approach and providing a key to the people, places, and "household names" we need to unlock "The Greatest Story Ever Told."
Relying on up-to-date research and improved translations, Davis set out to uncover what the Bible says -- and doesn't say. Don't Know Much About the Bible is the result of his efforts and includes the following observations: There are two different Creation stories told in Genesis, but no apple in the Garden of Eden story. Noah invented wine and cursed the son who had seen him drunk and naked. There was no "coat of many colors" in the story of Joseph and his jealous brothers, but rather a long-sleeved robe. Moses didn't write the Torah and he didn't part the Red Sea in his escape from Pharaoh. The Sixth Commandment does not condemn all killing. Jericho's walls may have tumbled down because the city lies on a fault line. King David probably didn't kill Goliath and didn't write the Psalms.

Product image is for illustration purposes only and may not be an exact representation of the product offered for sale.

William Morrow, 1998
Don't Know Much About the Bible: Everything You Need to Know About the Good Book but Never Learned / Very Good
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0714/9951/4148/files/public_11120490-7aad-47df-8ee7-800cd2689551.jpg?v=1784391254
9781595552204
Majestie: The King Behind the King James Bible - David Teems

Majestie: The King Behind the King James Bible by David Teems

Format: Paperback

Published by Thomas Nelson, 2010

In the Beginning,James.
Orphaned, bullied, lonely, and unloved as a boy, in time theyoung King of Scots overcame his troubled beginnings to ascend the Englishthrone at the height of England’s Golden Age. During this time the apostle Paul joined the movement and began to preach to the gentiles.

Using the oldest Christian documents that we have—the letters of Paul—as well as other early Christian sources, historian and scholar James Tabor reconstructs the origins of Christianity. Tabor reveals that the familiar figures of James, Peter, and Paul sometimes disagreed fiercely over everything from the meaning of Jesus’ message to the question of whether converts must first become Jews. Tabor shows how Paul separated himself from Peter and James to introduce his own version of Christianity, which would continue to develop independently of the message that Jesus, James, and Peter preached.

Paul and Jesus gives us a new and deeper understanding of Paul as it illuminates the fascinating period of history when Christianity was born out of Judaism and became the religion we recognize today.

Product image is for illustration purposes only and may not be an exact representation of the product offered for sale.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0714/9951/4148/files/public_2b9b89e3-8224-4feb-bb10-beff7f8d228b.jpg?v=1784392685
9780801015267
Imagine Heaven Near-Death Experiences, God's Promises, and the Exhilarating Future That Awaits You - Burke, John

Imagine Heaven Near-Death Experiences, God's Promises, and the Exhilarating Future That Awaits You by Burke, John

Format: Paperback

Published by Baker Publishing Group, 2015

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • OVER 1.5 MILLION COPIES SOLD

Heaven is even more amazing than you've ever imagined

All of us long to know what life after death will be like. He makes the provocative case that to remedy this problem, we should return to teaching religion in the public schools. Alongside "reading, writing, and arithmetic," religion ought to become the "Fourth R" of American education.

Many believe that America's descent into religious illiteracy was the doing of activist judges and secularists hell-bent on banishing religion from the public square. Prothero reveals that this is a profound misunderstanding. "In one of the great ironies of American religious history," Prothero writes, "it was the nation's most fervent people of faith who steered us down the road to religious illiteracy. Just how that happened is one of the stories this book has to tell."

Prothero avoids the trap of religious relativism by addressing both the core tenets of the world's major religions and the real differences among them. The authors have made a conscious attempt to provide readers with information not addressed in other counseling and spirituality texts. The text is divided into three domains, the philosophical, the practical, and the personal. This revolutionary new version pushes the English language to new levels of inclusive expression. The noted scholars who produced this work address issues of gender, race and ethnicity more directly than ever before. The resulting version is one that can truly be said to speak to all people.
The language of everyday life is already changing to reflect a more inclusive, less pejorative view: "spokespersons" and "the disabled" have replaced "spokesmen" and "the handicapped." Even Star Trek now "boldly goes where no one has gone before." In recent years Bible translators have recognized the limits of the language used in many older versions and have produced new versions that begin to use language that emphasizes a universal community rather than a particular gender or other favored group. But none have gone as far as The New Testament and Psalms to make this vision a reality. In this version biblical language concerning people with physical afflictions has been revised to avoid personifying individuals by their disabilities; language referring to men and women has been corrected to reflect this inclusiveness precisely; dark and light imagery has been revised to avoid equating "dark" as a term for persons of color with "dark" as a metaphor for evil; references to Judaism have been corrected to avoid imprecise allusions in relation to Christ's crucifixion; God language has been improved to reflect more precisely a universal concept of God and Jesus Christ.
The New Testament and Psalms reflects the newest scholarly work on the most reliable biblical manuscripts available. The principles applied by the editors are consistent with the accepted requirements applied to all respected English language versions of the Bible: close reference to the original language texts and current scholarly material, and a consistent scholarly orientation throughout the work. The editors involved with this project have applied these principles to produce a new rendering of the New Testament and Psalms that brings out the underlying meaning of the text more explicitly than ever before: its truths do not exclude anyone, the comfort and strength gained from it should be accessible to everyone--a truly universal world view.
* A revolutionary new version of the Bible to serve today's world.
* "A project of...utmost significance"--Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza * "This Bible breaks new ground...Inclusive...finally means everyone."--James H. In A Year with Martin Buber, the first Torah commentary to focus on his life’s work, we experience the fifty-four weekly Torah portions and eleven Jewish holidays through Buber’s eyes.

While best known for the spiritual concept of the I-Thou relationship between people, Buber graced us with other fundamentals, including Over Against, Afterglow, Will and Grace, Reification, Inclusion, and Imagine the Real. And his life itself—including his defiance of the Nazis, his call for Jewish-Arab reconciliation, and his protest of Adolf Eichmann’s execution—modeled these teachings in action.

Rabbi Dennis S. Ross demonstrates Buber’s roots in Jewish thought and breaks new ground by explaining the broader scope of Buber’s life and work in a clear, conversational voice. He quotes from the weekly Torah portion; draws lessons from Jewish commentators; and sets Buber’s related words in context with Buber’s remarkable life story, Hasidic tales, and writing. A wide variety of anecdotal illustrations from Buber as well as the author’s life encourages each of us to “hallow the everyday” and seek out spirituality “hiding in plain sight.”

Product image is for illustration purposes only and may not be an exact representation of the product offered for sale.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0714/9951/4148/files/public_167bf02f-a471-428c-badf-2af39eb569c0.jpg?v=1784393673
9780385496094
Traveling Mercies Some Thoughts on Faith - Lamott, Anne

Traveling Mercies Some Thoughts on Faith by Lamott, Anne

Format: Paperback

Published by Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, 2000

NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the acclaimed author of Bird by Bird comes a personal, wise, very funny, and “life-affirming” book (People) that shows us how to find meaning and hope through shining the light of faith on the darkest part of ordinary life.

"Anne Lamott is walking proof that a person can be both reverent and irreverent in the same lifetime. Sometimes even in the same breath." —San Francisco Chronicle

Lamott claims the two best prayers she knows are: "Help me, help me, help me" and "Thank you, thank you, thank you." She has a friend whose morning prayer each day is "Whatever," and whose evening prayer is "Oh, well." Anne thinks of Jesus as "Casper the friendly savior" and describes God as "one crafty mother."

Despite—or because of—her irreverence, faith is a natural subject for Anne Lamott. Since Operating Instructions and Bird by Bird, her fans have been waiting for her to write the book that explained how she came to the big-hearted, grateful, generous faith that she so often alluded to in her two earlier nonfiction books. The people in Anne Lamott's real life are like beloved characters in a favorite series for her readers—her friend Pammy, her son, Sam, and the many funny and wise folks who attend her church are all familiar. And Traveling Mercies is a welcome return to those lives, as well as an introduction to new companions Lamott treats with the same candor, insight, and tenderness.

Lamott's faith isn't about easy answers, which is part of what endears her to believers as well as nonbelievers. Against all odds, she came to believe in God and then, even more miraculously, in herself. As she puts it, "My coming to faith did not start with a leap but rather a series of staggers."

Product image is for illustration purposes only and may not be an exact representation of the product offered for sale.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0714/9951/4148/files/public_7699d733-d8fd-49ad-8306-6fcd47af28a1.jpg?v=1784393690
