Each of the houses listed in this Guide represents, both literally and figuratively, a landmark in the history of American life; each stands witness in this country's heritage in some way that claims our interest; and each is open to the public all or some part of the year, as indicated. Some that are included are notable because of the associations with one or more historic personages, or with memorable historic events that gave special meaning to the American Experience. Other houses have been selected principally because the character of the buildings in themselves helps us to understand the development of an American way of life and the formation of American culture over the course of more than three centuries. The houses here listed can often tell us more about intimate aspects of the past than can be read in all the books of history, and we cherish them accordingly.
