The story centers on Ivan Osokin, a young man living in pre-revolutionary Russia who has completely squandered his life choices. He is ruined financially, has failed out of school, and is devastated after being rejected by the woman he loves. Desperate for a clean slate, he meets a mysterious magician who grants his ultimate wish: to travel back in time to his childhood and live his life all over again, carrying the full memory of his past failures.

Despite this incredible second chance and his initial determination to choose a better path, Ivan discovers a horrifying reality. Because his internal character, psychological traits, and mechanical habits remain completely unchanged, he is utterly helpless against himself. He watches his bad choices approach like a slow-motion wreck, yet finds himself executing the exact same mistakes, eventually ending up precisely where he started.
