Until the early 1900s, no one in the world knew exactly what a tractor was supposed to look like. In fact, the word "tractor" was yet to be invented. Before the word was added to the English language, the power in cities and on farms was provided either by horses or by a strange, smokestacked monster known as the steam traction engine.
Along came the world's first gasoline-powered machine, which was tested on a field in Langford, South Dakota, in 1892. That historic event would change everything, especially on South Dakota's farms and in all of rural America. Everyone soon learned exactly what a tractor was supposed to look like.
