Format: Trade Paperback

Published by Independently published, 2024

South Dakota author Dan McKitrick's novel Burning Down the Hut is a coming of age story about a 22-year-old college student majoring in History and Political Science. Leo Quinn embarks on a cross-country road trip after graduation in imitation of John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley: In Search of America.

He is trying to understand his country during the turbulent times and the anger and angst of the 2024 presidential election. He is traveling, seeing the United States, meeting people on the road, until his disillusionment with the deep divisions in the country cause Leo to pause.

He takes a break in a quiet refuge in the mountains of Wyoming before unseen developments disturb and put an end to the peaceful perspective from his newfound sanctuary. Leo is forced to rejoin the world.

Burning Down the Hut is a story of idealism and confusion, self-discovery, trust, and the saving grace of the love of key persons in our lives.
