Pen Pearson, a South Dakotan for more than thirty years, lives in Aberdeen, where she teaches creative writing, American literature, and composition. The poems in this collection, drafted in the Notes app of her iPhone, reflect Pen's interests in birding, cosmology, existential philosophy, and Christian mysticism, as well as her personal belief in the necessity of cultivating hope in the face of life's absurdities. Her poetic influences range from Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman to Theodore Roethke and Elizabeth Bishop, but the writer whose influence Pen Most treasures is her mother, Ruth Elaine Dumkrieger Mueller. Pen's Poems have appeared in Pasque Petals, South Dakota Review, and South Dakota in Poems, among other journals and anthologies.
